The Hyderabad High Court admitted a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on Tuesday, which alleged that the Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanams (TTD) had not deposited a part of its income in the endowment administration fund of Andhra Pradesh from 1987 to 2014.
The PIL was filed by Dr MV Soundararajan of the Chilkur Balaji temple.
The Deccan Chronicle quoted the counsel appearing for the petitioner, stating that the arrears had accumulated to about Rs 2,500 crore.
The report also adds that the Endowments rules mandate that the TTD has to deposit 7 per cent of its income to the department so that the money can be distributed to smaller temples and for welfare of priests in a number of temples with low income.
The petitioner’s counsel also told the court that the money, distributed according to population, would mean that Telangana would get Rs 1,000 crore, while Andhra Pradesh would get Rs 1,500 crore.
