As many as five eateries were sealed on Thursday by the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB), after it was found that they were serving rotten fruit juice and cheese with fungus.
After a surprise visit on some reputed eateries in the Cantonment area, the sanitary wing officials of the SCB found that the customers were being served stale food material.
Friends Corner at Marredpally was serving six different varieties of juices to customers, all allegedly using rotten fruits.
When questioned by the official. the owner is reported to have admitted that the restaurant bought poor quality fruits like mosambi (citrus lemon), grapes and bananas for cheaper rates, which were often rotten.
Another eatery, Stop N Go located near AOC, Marredpally was also using poor quality of ingredients. The restaurant had been serving a pre-prepared dish with rotten mutton.
They allegedly kept meat and cheese with fungus in a refrigerator and prepared non-veg sandwiches for the customers with sub-standard material.
In Best Bakery, the official found that the owner was preparing food in a temporary kitchen constructed on an open nala.
For similar reasons, two other eateries, Punjab Kurries and Dosa Corner in Marredpally were also sealed.
“None of the eateries were following minimum rules to keep their kitchen clean. The drive will be intensified further,” SCB sanitary inspector, M Devender told Times of India.
Last year in October, one of the popular restaurants in Karkhana, Grill-9, was sealed by the SCB’s health wing.
SCB officials had found that the management had not procured a trade licence, while there were also rats in the kitchen.
“During the drive at Grill 9, it was found that the kitchen, toilets and the dining area of the hotel were being badly maintained. Secondly, the owner was using the parking area, which is government land, for storing hotel equipment,” an inspector earlier told Deccan Chronicle.
