Wichita police have arrested a 21-year-old man for Wednesday evening’s stabbing death of Dr. Achutha Reddy.

Jail records show Umar Rashid Dutt was booked early Thursday morning for first-degree murder. Lt. Todd Ojile said the suspect was arrested after a security guard at the Wichita Country Club reported a suspicious person with blood on him who was sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot.

Officers were called shortly after 7 p.m. to a stabbing at Holistic Psychiatric Services on Carriage Parkway, near Central and Edgemoor. Lt. Ojile said Dutt was Dr. Reddy’s client.

“The suspect was in the business for a short time. He left and then later came back with Dr. Reddy, and they went into an office. After going in an office, a disturbance was heard. An office manager entered into the office and observed the suspect assaulting Dr. Reddy.”

Ojile said the office manager tried to stop the assault, which allowed Dr. Reddy to flee the office.

“The suspect then chased Dr. Reddy out of the business, where he caught up with him in the alley behind the business where we believe a second assault occurred.”

Dr. Reddy died of multiple stab wounds.

Via Christi’s website says Reddy attended medical school at Osmania University in India in 1986 and did his residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center in 1998. He specialized in psychiatry.

Patients are devastated to find out that Dr Reddy was killed by a 21yo patient. They want to hold a vigil for Dr Reddy tonight.

Dr. Reddy’s death is Wichita’s 24th homicide of the year.

Dutt was held without bond Thursday morning. Ojile said the case would likely be presented to the district attorney’s office Friday afternoon.

Holistic Psychiatric Services Psychotherapist Brenda Trammel released the following statement:

Yesterday we experienced a great loss in our lives. And when I say we I am including his family, friends, colleagues, and the many people he has helped over the years. Dr. Reddy was an amazing, compassionate man that was kind and loving to anyone he met. He had a gift of knowing what each and everyone of us needed and gave it freely. He would often tell me you have to have freedom to live life to the fullest and this is how he lived his life. He thought of himself as our father and his job was to guide us to do well in our lives. He expected the best from all of us and we gave it to him with the same abandon he gave to us.

The senselessness of this action bears heavy on all of our souls but knowing him we have to believe in his principles and he would tell us this was his destiny, do not be tearful for me, I will always be there with you. Please allow us this time to heal as the mental health community deals with this tragic loss. I have already received phone calls from doctors and therapists that have offered their help to us. We want to thank them for their kindness to us during this period for loss. Dr. Reddy’s family wants to thank each and every one that made his life a joy every day.
