The Congress party program in Thipparthy mandal on Wednesday was the last time Nalgonda MLA Komatireddy Venkat Reddy interacted with Boddupalli Srinivas, his right-hand man in the district since he was a student leader.
Srinivas and his wife Lakshmi, who was elected the municipal chairperson in 2014 from the Congress, embraced the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti in April 2016, but returned soon. “Since some time there have been threats from the TRS asking them to leave Congress,” Mr. Venkat Reddy alleged.
Terming the murder “a cowardly act by those in power unable to face competition in Nalgonda,” he, along with party cadre, moved to the Clock Tower Center and staged a sit-in. “We have doubts over the murder, the police should verify the call data records and take action against everyone involved,” he demanded.
Mr. Venkat Reddy also alleged the role of an elected representative of the ruling party and a senior police official in the district, in the brutal murder of Srinivas. A grief-stricken Venkat Reddy visited the crime scene and later comforted the grieving Lakshmi and her two schoolgoing children. He was joined by his brother and Congress MLC Komatireddy Raja Gopal Reddy.
Speaking briefly to presspersons outside her home, Ms. Lakshmi said “a group of people they trusted since their childhood had betrayed the family now”. The Government should be held responsible for the murder, as it rejected their applications requesting sanction of arms licence or gunman’s security, she added.
Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy later said the party will stand in support of the family. More than 3,000 people including relatives, locals and partymen filled the streets of Savarkar Nagar in the town when the funeral procession started out.
